Food Day Omaha: Free Activities for the Whole Family

Food Day Omaha is coming up on Saturday October 11th from 8:30AM - 12:30PM at 11th & Howard Street. Not only is this day the last Old Market Farmer's Market of the season, but it's also a Food Day nationwide. A celebration and movement towards healthy, affordable, sustainable and fairly made food.

Modeled after Earth Day, the national organization was founded by the nonprofit Center for Science in the Public Interest in order to encourage and inspire Americans to “Eat Real”. Thousands of events will be taking place around the country on and around national Food Day, Oct. 24, to inspire healthy living.

The Omaha Farmers Market, Natural Grocers and Paradigm Gardens have teamed up to host Food Day Omaha. In addition to the Omaha Farmers Market, there will be up to 30 local food and health-‐related organizations will be present at Food Day Omaha to provide activities, information, and awareness about their respective focuses.

During Food Day Omaha you will be able to interact with experts to discuss a variety of topics, including balanced diet, local growing, cooking, agriculture and food policy issues, and hunger. Approximately 100 different local Omaha Farmers Market vendors will be selling a large variety of fall produce including greens, potatoes, radishes, eggplant, pumpkins, squash as well as baked goods, meats, cheeses and homemade crafts as well.

Food Day Omaha activities include:

 • Cooking Demonstrations by Cooking Matters, a program of the Visiting Nurses Association, and Upstream Brewing Company.
 • Natural Grocers will be handing out reusable bags with information about naturally-‐raised, non-‐GMO turkeys and information on their free classes.
 • Guckenheimer, the food service behind Union Pacific and TDAmeritrade headquarters and the Holland Performing Arts Center will be offering samplings of local food, including a grilled sweet corn and tomato roasted on garlic crostini with fresh thyme and parmesan.
 • Pick up a free copy of Edible Omaha Magazine and explore their pop-‐up art exhibit from the Lexicon of Sustainability.
